Mickey Mousing Around For Thanksgiving – Part 4

And the Thanksgiving adventure concludes.

It's Saturday and we fly out Sunday morning early.  VERY EARLY.  So this is our last day in the parks, so we get up early (go figure) and are once again at the main gates at opening time.

But this time, we needed to get a special picture taken for our Christmas card.  And it was so cool that Tinker Bell showed up to make it extra special.  This picture was taken by a Disney employee.  I would recommend that if you are going to a Disney park, that you sign up for a free Photopass.  Their professional photographers take your picture with their cameras (and yours), and then you can be in it, without the fear of handing your camera over to that sketchy looking dude from Colorado, who will either run off with it, or crop your heads off.  And the more you use it, the better deal it becomes at the end if you want to purchase the pictures.

Disneyland_04_10

After our Christmas card picture, we finally made it to Big Thunder Mountain where some dino-bones poke out of the side of a cliff.

Disneyland_04_01

And if you are wondering what it's like to ride the Big Thunder Mountain rollercoaster, here's a little video I shot on the ride.

And of course, we hit Pirates & Haunted Mansion again.  And again.

Disneyland_04_11

It's then back to the brier patch and Splash Mountain and a zip-a-dee-do-dah day.  (Although later, it proved less than a happy place, but more on that later.)

One thing that I noticed at various locations around Disneyland was additional corporate sponsorship.  It was always somewhat subtle.  Never a huge corporate logo in neon or anything, but there are times when you might start to wonder if things have gone to far.  Now, I chuckled about the Kodak photo spots that were still around (is Kodak still a viable company?), but when I came out of a bathroom to discover that it was sponsored by Quilted Northern toilet paper, that's when I felt a line had been crossed, you know?

Disneyland_04_14See, Brer Fox and Brer Bear out running around outside Splash Mountain.  I don't know who the kid is, just like he has no clue who the characters are. Disneyland_04_13However, this group, I know.  Especially the bundle of energy in orange.  No, not Tigger, silly, Cora!

After meeting Tigger (Eeyore and Pooh, too), we grabbed a late breakfast where The Daughter got her traditional Mickey Mouse pancake at the River Belle Terrace.

Disneyland_04_12

We then headed over to California Adventure, but not before Cora spotted Captain Hook.  Hook would not stand still for a picture (seriously, she's so stinking cute, wouldn't you want to pose for a picture?), so I had to run ahead and set up an ambush to capture this picture.

Disneyland_04_05

On the way over, we did some shopping, since a number of our food coupons had shopping coupons on them that were good in the souvenir shops only until 1:00.  After dropping our booty off at the motel, we made it to  California Adventure.

Disney really needs to reboot the park.  There is an obvious attempt to be much more of a thrilling, ADVENTUROUS, and sophisticated park than Disneyland across the plaza.  They have the equivalent of "Main St. USA" as "Buena Vista St.", but it seems too ritzy and unfriendly.  They really need to tone down the "California" and up the "Adventure".  The Beast's Library needs to move over to Disneyland proper, the golden age of aviation section needs to become a Star Wars area now that they have it.  They need a year round Nightmare Before Christmas attraction of some type.  They need to up the Pixar level around "Cars Land", and they need to do something Marvel, too, now that they own that.  And as Cora has mentioned, plant some more trees and get more characters walking around.  If I wanted the "broiling in the California sun" experience, I don't need to pay the admission fee!

While in C.A., we went on the Soarin' Over California ride (we'd gotten "Fast Passes" earlier, so we breezed right in).  The ride is like taking a hang glider over various parts of the state.  The concept of the ride is cool enough, but it is really fairly dull.  They need to revamp it as some kind of "Star Tours" simulator.

After that, there was a trip thru the Monster's, Inc. ride, which was cool, but just basically retold the story of the movie.  And then another trip on the Tower of Terror before heading back to Disneyland.

Disneyland_04_08

Back at Disneyland, we took a 1.25 ride loop around the park on the train, including a nighttime pass thru Small World.

Disneyland_04_07 Disneyland_04_09

We had a quick dinner at the Holly Jolly Bakery, and then I had to go back to the motel room.

No, I wasn't feeling sick, I went back to catch the Notre Dame game.  They were playing USC (just up the road from where I was) and the game was close at half, so, as pre-arranged, I left the girls to write postcards, and get our Photopass CD, and generally have fun, and I ran back to watch the game.  They won, and I was very happy.  (I'll be watching the game tonight, too!)

Disney_LA_ND

I ran back over to the park, and met back up with them for a few last rides.

Disneyland_04_15

On Splash Mountain, we sat in the front of the logs this time and got totally drenched.  Including our stuff, so we were cold and wet the rest of the evening.  The Daughter's hand is totally hiding Cora's head.  And then, the sadness kind of crept in as we rode Pirates and Haunted Mansion ONE.LAST.TIME.

We then cut thru the crowd as they were watching the Fantasmic show just as Maleficent turned into a dragon and set the lake on fire.  It looked kind of cool, but as short timers, we had places to go and last rides to ride.

Disneyland_04_16

Disneyland_04_17

We hit Star Tours again, and then Buzz Lightyear Astro-Blasters (I totally kicked their butts Smile), and then, we sadly trudged toward the gates and an ugly long day of travel home very early the next morning.  But Minnie was there to say "Good-bye" so that was nice of her.

Disneyland_04_18

Sunday?  Not a whole lot to show or say.  We got up EARLY and waited for our shuttle to come pick us up.

Disneyland_05_01

Someone was very cold and tired.

Disneyland_05_02

We got to LAX were I spent $45 on 3 turkey sandwiches, 3 bags of chips, and 3 bottles of water.  RIP-OFF!

The flight back to Chicago was smooth, and I drifted in and out most of the way.  From O'Hare, we caught a L train toward the city, hopped off and immediately caught a bus which dropped us half a block from the condo.

And that was it.

The grand Thanksgiving at Disney was over, except for the laundry and the bills.  Smile

And of course for me, doing the "Dad thing" and passing out on the sofa!

Sorry it took so long to tell this, but you know how life just gets in the way sometimes, right?

Anyway, I leave you with one final picture from the trip…

Mickey Mousing Around For Thanksgiving – Part 3

Black Friday in Disneyland. Same approach as for the shoppers at the mall: get there early. We were at the gates when they opened, and made a beeline to New Orleans Square and the Haunted Mansion. The place was deader than the graveyard out front. We had our own "stretching room" elevator ride down to the doom buggies. After we left the ride, it was so empty that we rode it again.

Disneyland_03_01

It was then off to ride Pirates of the Caribbean, which was also pretty empty.

We met up with the half of Cora's family that wasn't sick and had a late breakfast and then went off to have our silhouettes cut.  It's one of their family traditions.  And it turns out,the lady who did the cutting (but not the strutting.  She's no Brutus the Barber Beefcake) remembered doing Cora's silhouettes twice before, and Cora remembered her, too.

Disneyland_03_09

While everyone else headed for Autotopia, Cora's mom and I found a shaded bench at one of the Disneyland railroad stations to sit a spell and watch the cars and trains go by.  (And watch strollers and bags and stuff).

Disneyland_03_06

Disneyland_03_03The 16 year old Daughter behind the wheel, motoring along with ease. Disneyland_03_05The Wife, letting the 5 year old Niece take the wheel.
Disneyland_03_04The 8 year old Nephew trying to figure out how to pass. Disneyland_03_07And the 2 year old, driving Ms. Daisy (the sister-in-law).

Cora's Mom ran all the silhouettes back to her room while the rest of us took off for some more California Adventure adventure.  Time passed. Lunch came and went, and so did Phineas and Ferb in their tricked out rig.

Disneyland_03_08

And Cora and I ditched the daughter with her sister and them, and borrowing her brother's car, we took off on important business.

Bloggy business.

Since we were in LA, we went to see "She Who Shall Not Be Named (Due to Privacy Concerns)".  It was a fair drive from Disneyland to SWSNBN(DTOC)'s house, but traffic was nothing, and our GPS lead us right there.  It was great meeting her, and see where she lived.  We met her mom, talked a lot, ate Chinese food, saw her scrapbook from back when she was young and famous, and even helped her identify one of the people in one of the pictures with her, thanks to Facebook.

Disneyland_03_14

(FYI – It was Mark Slade from The High Chapperal)

What we didn't do was take a whole lot of pictures.  (Boggling, I know.)

Here is one that we took, however.

Disneyland_03_10

We got back to Disneyland and met up with the family over at California Adventure.

Disneyland_03_11

Disneyland_03_12

This was their last day in the park, so we stayed a while and road some rides, including Splash Water Falls (see comments below), and saw the fireworks again.  We then had to say good-bye to the Sister-in-Law and the kids.

Disneyland_03_13

The Daughter and Cora then went, exhausted, back to the room, while I picked up our copy of the silhouettes from here mom.  The hotels were only about a half mile apart, but when I got to ours, I could tell we were all shot, but getting ready for our final day at the parks.

What's up with Splash Mountain, anyway?  Disney seems to want pretend that "Song of the South" doesn't exist, yet they still have a whole ride based on a movie they will never let out of the vault again?  And not only that, Brer Fox and Brer Bear characters were even running around.  Like the kids even know who these two are.  Do us a favor, Disney, either re-theme the ride to "Pocahontas" or "The Princess and the Frog" or something more modern, or remake "Song of the South" and make it non-offensive.

A Moving Tale of Trust for Christmas*

elephants1In 1986, Mkele Mbembe was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University. On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Mbembe approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it.

As carefully and as gently as he could, Mbembe worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments.

Mbembe stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Mbembe never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty four years later, Mbembe was walking through the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Mbembe and his son Tapu were standing.

The large bull elephant stared at Mbembe, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1986, Mbembe couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant. Mbembe summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant looked at Mbembe as if could see straight into his soul.

The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Mbembe's legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

Probably wasn't the same elephant.

* Yes, this is a repeat of from the last four Christmases. But I have to keep up the tradition. And Lincoln Park Zoo hasn't had elephants for a few years now.

I hope you are had / are having a very merry Christmas.

She's A Winner! But You Already Knew That.

Yeah, yeah, so it's my birthday today.  Not what I want to talk about.

I know most of you already know from Facebook, but I don't care.

Gonna brag on The Daughter over here, too.

Walgreens was running a contest in Chicago and St. Louis for high school students to enter works of art for their "Expressions" contest.  On the day before the contest ended, The Daughter entered a stop motion animation project she'd been working on for weeks.

  • She made the puppet.
  • She made the background
  • She shot the nearly 1,000 pictures herself.
  • She made the stills into a video and added a song in the background.

We were so proud of the work she did, and it was awesome.

And then the people from Walgreens called on the day the contest was ending.  They loved the video, but…

  • The video was 5 seconds too long.
  • The song in the video was copyrighted, and unless she could get it cleared, she had to replace it or just remove the sound entirely.

This news came after she got home from school, and she had to resubmit it by midnight if she wanted to enter, but they REALLY wanted her to enter.

As she heard the clock loudly ticking, she cut the video down to size, removed the song, and removed the lip-syncing to the song.  Then, she found a website that let her mix her own soundtrack for it, and she put that in as the soundtrack for the video.

It's now 11:20, and she went to the website to submit it…

And it was closed!  Turned out, they were hosting the contest on servers in Philadelphia, and since it was after midnight there, they closed the contest.

So, she called the Walgreens lady who had called us.  She gave us an email address to send the video to, and we submitted it with little time to spare.

Then there was a round of public voting (thank you all who voted), where we saw the other 50 or so videos she was up against.

And yesterday, it was announced:  The Daughter won first place in the Chicago Multimedia category.

  • She won $500 for her school.
  • She won $500 for her teacher.
  • She will be one of the guests of honor at an awards ceremony where they will present her with a check for $2,000.

Yesterday, she asked me if I was proud of her for winning.  "I'm HAPPY for you that you won.  I'm PROUD of the effort and dedication you put into it, especially when you had every reason to give up."

And here's a link to the ORIGINAL full video, song and all:

Yup, I'm proud of her.

Mickey Mousing Around For Thanksgiving – Part 2

While I know that many people would consider this a crime against nature, our alarm went off at 4:30 am on Thanksgiving morning.  And we had no turkey to get cooking.  We had to get to Disneyland an hour early for our "Magic Morning" that let us in the park an hour before everyone else.  That let us in before everyone else, which let us ride the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean a couple of times before things got crazy.

Disneyland_02_01

We then wandered over and tried to pull the sword from the stone.  Didn't budge for any of us.

Disneyland_02_03

The Daughter took her Halloween costume dress (san makeup and wig) and wore it on Thursday.  It was really cool.  A lot of the cast-members (the term for Disney employees) seemed to be genuinely thrilled to see someone her age getting into the magic aspect of it all.

And Jack was impressed.

We then ran over to Toon Town and played with all the sight gags that they've got going on over there.

Disneyland_02_04

We ran across the Mad Hatter and Alice playing a musical chairs style game along Main Street USA.  The Hatter played the self-obsessed joker.  Alice was his dizzy blonde assistant / victim.

Disneyland_02_05

The whole gang met up for Thanksgiving dinner (and the only whole group shot of the trip) at a restaurant by one of the hotels.  I had the Thanksgiving plate, and it was pretty good.  Even came with a slice of pumpkin pie.  And still suffering from the lack of sleep, I took full advantage of the free refills on the Diet Coke.

Disneyland_02_06

And then we posed with the B-I-L and his girlfriend before heading back to the parks.

Disneyland_02_07

We then saw "Small World" all lit up for the evening, which was, I have to admit, pretty breathtaking.

We then hopped across the no man's land separating Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.  The park was MUCH emptier.  Except for the weird teenage rave that is the Mad T Party.

And the it was off to the Tower of Terror…

Disneyland_02_09

… where I wondered how they ever dusted an attraction that is supposed to look a certain level of dusty?  Until I started wondering why I was flying up out of my seat.

Disneyland_02_10

  • When did "guacamole" become a politically incorrect term?  Bought a chicken sandwich in Disneyland that came with "avocado salsa".  Really?  REALLY?  Avocado salsa?  Trust me, I know guacamole, and that was guacamole.
  • The patio in front of the Pizza Port in Tomorrowland is a great place to view the nightly fireworks.  I know they are designed to be seen form Main Street, but that's where everyone is, and you have to fight the crowds, and get there early, and wait in a human corral with the rest of the herd, etc.  Tomorrowland is a lot less crowded, and you still have great sight lines.
  • Hitting a restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner is a great way to keep from REALLY overeating.

Mickey Mousing Around For Thanksgiving – Part 1

So, let's just jump into it, shall we?  Wednesday morning the alarm went off @ 2:30 am, the cab arrived at 4:00 am, and by 6:30 am, Cora, The Daughter, and I were on a plane heading for LAX and Disneyland to meet up with most of her family for Thanksgiving.

Jealous yet?

The flight went smoothly, there was no real issue with holiday travel crowds at all.  Now, the Super Shuttle people getting us to our hotel seemed like they were making it up as they went along, but eventually a van zipped at 70 mph to our hotel, where it turned out that our hotel room was ready early!

Disneyland_01_01

And we were in the Disneyland park by lunchtime.  The castle was decorated for the winter, but the weather was far from wintery.

Disneyland_01_04

In fact, it felt a lot like Halloween around the Haunted Mansion.  Since "A Nightmare Before Christmas" is The Daughter's favorite movie, we made many, many, many passes through its haunted halls.

Disneyland_01_02

We tracked down a couple of cute kids from Cora's family, and got them to pose with Jack Skellington.

Disneyland_01_03

And we got nice little video of Jack chatting with the family.

We hung out with the family the rest of the day, riding rides and hearing about their cruise the week before.  The Daughter was so psyched to see them all, but she REALLY missed Boy-Cousin and Grandma the most.

Disneyland_01_05

As night rolled in, the lights came on, and our get up and go, got up and went.  So, we trudged back across the street to the hotel and passed out.

Notes:

  • This is my third "Disney" visit and my third Disney park.  First was Euro (now Paris), then came Disney World, and now Disneyland.  World is my favorite park, but this was my favorite trip.
  • This was The Daughter's third Disney visit, all to Disneyland.  She has never seen the Haunted Mansion in its traditional form.  Always decked out for Nightmare Before Christmas.  And she likes it that way.
  • We met up with Cora's mom, sister, brother-in-law, their three kids, her brother and his girlfriend.  We were scattered across various hotels.
  • I saw far more Jack Skellington T-shirts than Mickey Mouse T-shirts.  I think Disney is seriously going to need to consider making a permanent Nightmare attraction, probably in California Adventure, maybe by the Tower of Terror.
