Tech Tuesday – Buzz Off

I’ve been wondering what to do for a Tech Tuesday post. I just bought a new camera, but I haven’t taken any pictures with it, so I can’t judge it well yet. Maybe after I come back from Seattle.

I’ve found a new (or new to me) blogging tool, but I really want to use it for a week before I comment on it.

Then I remembered dear Fancy Schmancy’s Ode To My Alarm Clock. Saving my bacon, thanks.

I know that in my 100-4-100 I mentioned how much I hate to replace a bit of technology that works just fine. Case in point, my razor. Another case study: My clock radio.

ClockRadio-02

This bad boy is my Yorx clock radio that I bought form DAK. (For those of you not into tech in the 80’s, DAK was a like a mail order Sharper Image / Radio Shack [wiki]) I bought this back in my sophomore year of college. Winter of 1985 I believe. The cassette player hasn’t worked in two decades, but the radio works fine. And fact that the speakers are hooked in with a standard RCA plug means that I can move the speakers. Normally I have the left speaker tucked around the corner in the bath.

ClockRadio-01

My frienemy sits across the room, so I can see it over the foot of my bed, but I would have to get out of bed, and walk across the room to get to that little silver sleep button. And once I’ve stood up, there’s not point in laying back down. Might as well listen to some tunes on XRT.

That is quite the dinosaur you have there, Scope! But, I'm with you, if it ain't broke, don't replace it... which is why I lug around a cell phone the size of a brick which can't even send text messages.

An oldie but a goodie, eh? As for the one on the bottom, I've have never needed a frienemy of that nature before, but in the last two months or so, I've actually started hitting the dreaded snooze button *gasp*. I think I might need to do the across-the-room thing!

Are my eyes deceiving me? Is there, in fact, a cassette in there?

In a cassette player that doesn't work?

And I'm sure glad this isn't like the Ebay silver tea kettle picture...I'm glad you're dressed to take the picture, if you know what I mean...

hee hee. Sorry. ;)

Yes, I see the reflection.

Yes, I am fully clothed.

No, the cassette player is empty.

Yes, I did think about about cleaning the dust under the buttons, but chose not to.

When you die, I want that. Make a note and stick it on the bottom of it.

*like I'll outlive anyone.*

Yeah I remember Dak, or dag or whatever that place was.

That's a clock stereo. Two speakers for an alarm clock. That is some high tech stuff.
It's been a while since I took apart an alarm clock radio, but I've never seen two speakers on an alarm clock radio before.

That thing is bad-ass.

I say keep it until it dies a a natural death.

I bought a Sharp stereo system in 1988 as a college grad present. It has a turntable and dual cassette player. After LPs and cassettes became dinosaurs, I had the stereo speakers hooked up to my 100-disc CD player and the stereo is my HDTV stand. If it ain't broke...

Speaking of college, I used to have a bell clock on the other side of the room to get me up.

*LAUGHING AT THE QUICK HITS!!* It will be a close one, huh?! Hee hee hee.

I can't talk though. I only just mailed mine and it was ready to go a week ago!

About 10 years ago, I was all bent on replacing it with some remote controled thing that would wake to CD.

I'm really glad I chose not to. And I do plan on keeping it. With two actual speakers (crappy speakers, but so) it does actually sound surprisingly well.

Thanks for the link, I think, but not sure I want to be attached to that old-skool stink... ;)

Did you carry this around on your shoulder, blaring "I'm Bad" and sporting a faux hawk? With ripped jeans and a sleeveless tee?

I shouldn't tease - I had carebears on my underpants in the 80's.
